Add this to the list of things we love about Louisiana--satsumas!! Satsuma mandarins are one of the beauties of living here. They are small, easy to peel, and oh so yummy! They are much like a clementine orange and I love that they are grown locally! We look forward to them more and more every year. They start appearing in stores in mid-October it seems and we get them all Winter long.
And let me tell you...the ones who really love them are these boys! (and can I say how much I adore this picture of Sam? Because I do...that's all!) They honestly became addicted to them this year and I was worried they were going to need a 12 step program once the season was over.
So the last two years, it has been a fun little Saturday activity for us to take a drive down to Plaquemines Parish, past Belle Chasse where they are grown and buy them right from the fruit stand. We have gone to Ben Becnel's Fruit Stand, to be exact! We tried finding a grove that would let us come and pick them ourselves, but didn't find any this year. This little trip was on January 15 and it was a beautiful day! The drive takes about an hour from our house and it's just a fun drive. I feel like I'm getting out of the city for a bit which is kind of nice sometimes!
This year we also bought a lot of Louisiana navels and they were SO good! I usually don't buy a lot of oranges at the store because it just seems like so often I buy them and they aren't very good at all...not sweet, kind of bitter and totally disappointing. You maybe have experienced the same thing?? Well, these were definitely not a disappointment! They were fabulous!
Annnnd....this year I got totally 100% hooked on the grapefruit. Just like the boys were addicted to satsumas, I could NOT get enough of the grapefruit! When we have always bought different varieties of the oranges, I don't know why I never thought to try the Louisiana grapefruit. They were awesome. I was eating more than one a day for quite a while there. I wish I had one RIGHT now, in fact!
We left with 15 pounds of satsumas, 5 pounds of navels, and 5 pounds of grapefruit. Can you just smell the vitamin C from here or what?! And I was a little doubtful that we'd be able to finish them before they went bad...
And....as the routine goes, we get home from buying satsumas (whether it was on our trip or we've bought them at the grocery store) and the boys immediately bust into them. The procedure consists of climbing on the counter in the kitchen to get a paper towel, getting a satsuma, walking to the living room and plopping down on the floor. And the peeling/eating begins! The orange peels are placed on the paper towel so they can pick it up and throw it all in the garbage when they are finished.

And of course, there is a big sense of satisfaction when one peels it all in one piece! Rightfully so, of course. They always say that Grandpa Andersen would be so proud of them! And he would, for sure!
Mmmmm, YUM! And those 15 pounds of satsumas we bought? Yeah, the boys (and only the boys) ate 10 pounds of them in 2 days. Yikes! You would have thought I had candy in the kitchen as I constantly found them sneaking them away. Literally! They would sit down and start eating them and before I knew it, they'd have eaten 5 or 6 a piece! Let's just say that consuming that many oranges in such a short amount of time can do a number on one's system. :) But it didn't seem to slow them down. I had to watch them like a hawk to make sure they didn't eat too many. I guess that is the slight disadvantage to having them be so easy for them to peel & eat by themselves. We love them, though, and I am already missing citrus season! And I realize now that none of us got sick this Winter--perhaps it really was the insane amount of vitamin C we were consuming from November to February!
